–Urbi Ananya Saikia
A girl named Urbi
My name is Urbi. I am just a teenage girl named as Urbi. The name is now associated with my identity. I always wonder why my parents chose this name for me. Today, I am going to tell you a little story of my life relating to my name and identity; how I learned about the value of my identity beyond a name.
Urbi or Urvi?
One day I asked my mom about the meaning of my name. She told me that it means “the earth”. I was so happy that I and mother earth share the same name; that day, I thought that I am here on the earth to do something very significant. I will definitely leave a footprint on the history of mankind! I know you would think it’s too much! But, yes, that is who I am! A kind of wild day dreamer!
Then one day I got to know that my name’s actual meaning is “a princess” in Egyptian. To mean the earth, the correct spelling should be “Urvi”. So, suddenly, from mother earth I transformed into a princess. I was disappointed. As the name “Urbi” was already recorded in my birth certificate, I can’t even change or correct my name immediately. You may think that why I wanted to change my name, because, being princess is not a bad thing at all. But, at that time my concept of a princess was an irritated, greedy and selfish lady as shown in some movies.

Then one day one of my elder sisters told me about the Queen Elizabeth. She told me that before becoming a queen she was also a princess. I was enamored with Queen Elizabeth. And guess what! I was again in love with my name. Few days later, I got to know about the wife of Karna in Mahabharata. Her name was also Urvi. A lot of people may not know about her, as she was not a popular character; but, anyway she was also a part of an epic mythological story of India, the Mahabharata. Now, this made me upset again. Being Urbi or a princess, I have lost the opportunity of carrying a name of a mythological character! I had told my mom that I really wanted to correct the spelling of my name this time.
Final realization
Fortunately, my mom was in no confusion like me. She explained me that a name is just a symbol of identity and the meaning of your name carries has no value untill you do something unforgettable of your own. What she told me that day is now etched on my mind: “a name is nothing but a symbol of your identity, but it’s not your identity, and your name only gets a true meaning and some value when you really do something extraordinary in the history of mankind”.
